    Full Overview

Three-fifths of urban populations will be aged under 18 years by 2030. Yet policies to engage with young people in guiding their education, employment, quality of life, and wellbeing remain limited. Renewed efforts are underway using innovative strategies to work with young people in shaping the future of their cities. As cities around the world seek to cope with climate change, socioeconomic inequalities, migration and economic growth, how can leaders develop effective and sustainable solutions?

In Bangladesh, the Delta Fund encourages young people to take a leading role in building climate resilience, while in Indonesia, online forums have been key in fostering civic engagement with youth. The Block by Block Foundation together with UN-Habitat and collaborators has used Minecraft to engage young people in Somaliland, Nairobi and the Gaza Strip to empower communities to rejuvenate neglected urban spaces. Can these initiatives be scaled to give their peers in other cities around the world the necessary tools for meaningful and inclusive urban growth? If so, how can this be done? What lessons can be learnt from successful strategies to develop policies that fit the distinctive needs of other urban areas?

This webinar hosted by the Financial Times, in partnership with Fondation Botnar, will explore the importance of engaging young people in the future of cities, the challenges involved and the strategies that have been successful in creating vibrant cities fit for the future.
